Ispirata al film Chinatown, diretto nel 1974 da Roman Polanski e interpretato da Jack Nicholson e Faye Dunaway, che ottenne una decina di nominations e un unico

Oscar, assegnato allo sceneggiatore Robert Towne, questa serie è ambientata a Los Angeles a metà degli anni Trenta. Sono gli anni della Grande depressione, e crimine e corruzione sono all'ordine del giorno, tanto che la città ha davvero bisogno di angeli custodi come l'eccentrico investigatore privato Jake Ayminster (Wayne Rogers, proveniente da Mash), coadiuvato dalla fedele segretaria Marsha (Elaine Joyce), dall'avvocato Michael Brimm (Philip Sterling) e dal tenente Murray Quint (Clifton James).

Elegantissimo (non solo dispone di un guardaroba invidiabile, ma cura anche scarpe, cravatte e altri particolari), Jake Ayminster è un vero duro, simpatico e ironico quanto basta.

Peccato che le storie risultassero spesso un po' deboli, dato che i produttori dedicavano maggiore attenzione alla ricostruzione del periodo storico (automobili, cartelli stradali, abbigliamento, telefoni e così via) che alle trame. I tredici telefilm da 50 minuti di Cify of Angels sono andati in onda negli Stati Uniti dal 3 febbraio al 10 agosto 1976.
